Press Forward Grantmaking
Investing in Local News Nationwide
Press Forward mobilizes funding to help ensure every community has access to trusted local news and information. Together, our network of funders has invested more than $400 million in local news organizations and the infrastructure that makes their work possible.
We invest in four strategic areas that help local newsrooms serve communities today while building a stronger foundation for tomorrow.
Equity: Closing Local
Coverage Gaps
We invest in local news organizations that serve communities too often overlooked or underserved — including rural communities, communities of color, and linguistically diverse communities — so everyone has access to trusted local news and information.
Infrastructure: Building the support systems local news needs to thrive
Strong local journalism depends on strong support behind the scenes. We invest in the infrastructure that makes local news possible—from legal services and technology to training, safety resources, and business support—so newsrooms can focus on serving their communities.

Policy: Expanding access to local news and information
We support state and local policy efforts that help communities access trusted local news and information while protecting the independence of local news organizations and the freedoms that make independent reporting possible.

Sustainability: Strengthening the financial foundation of local news
Press Forward’s network of funders invest in local news organizations that people know and trust, helping their businesses grow stronger so they can continue serving their communities.
Press Forward supports newsroom sustainability by working to shift newsroom practices so that all communities have access to trusted local news and information. This support goes beyond money. Funders also provide resources, connections, shared services, and other forms of support that are just as critical to helping newsrooms thrive beyond a single round of funding.
